The Dean of Alba at the Economist's 25th Round Table Discussion with the Greek Government

During his speech, that took place on the second day of the conference and the panel discussion "Restarting business after covid-19 ", Dean Axarloglou focused mainly on the human and learning aspect of the post covid era. He mentioned that through the pandemic we learn that “normal” might mean that things will be changing abruptly and suddenly, on a global scale and we are expected and needed to adapt quickly to these disruptions.

The “new normal” will lead to a series of “new normal” e.g. phenomena that are new but they will be staying for a while. For instance, a hybrid model of work in the office and remotely.

According to Dr. Axarlolgou, competencies such as creativity, adaptability and agility and also mindsets such as continuous learning and collaboration with others (like in ecosystems) will help is handle and progress in such an evolving environment.

The Economist’s 25th Roundtable with the Government of Greece, was held at Grand Resort Lagonissi, Athens on July 8-9,2021. The event was able to return to a nearly normal physical meeting, while also being livestreamed and having several speakers join by video link, pointing the “hybrid” future of such conferences.  A top-class collection of speakers took part, maintaining the tradition of this high-profile annual event.

Alba was once more the Academic Partner of this high profile annual event that covered a wide range of topics, from geopolitics and the economy to finance, energy, health and technology. Very broadly, the story of the event was that of two contrasting moods: optimism on Greece and wariness about global trends.

The conference marked a number of anniversaries—Greece’s 200th, The Economist Roundtable’s own 25th, the second anniversary the New Democracy government—making it a good time to take stock of the state of Greece, Europe and the world. Important global developments informed the discussions: the continuing struggle against covid-19, a new administration in America, the forthcoming elections in key European countries and the prospect of money from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF).
